Powered by strong performances and strong art direction to capture the vibe of 70s Tamil Nadu, Sarpatta Parambai tackles heavy issues with the positive spirit of a sports drama. Spotlighting the rivalries of two boxing clans - Sarpatta and Idiyappan - in north Chennai in the 1970s, this is the story of Kabilan (played by Arya) who must punch above his weight to fight oppression and gain equality for his community. The boxing movie of July to actually watch is a Tamil period drama, helmed by the inimitable Pa. Just goes to prove that teenagers and terror go hand in hand, generation after generation. If Part 1, set in 1991, introduced us to the twin towns of Sunnyvale and Shadyside and their manic residents, this one, set in 1978, takes place in a summer camp where Shadysiders and Sunnyvalers charge up their rivalries with the Colour War, even as a killer is on the loose. Those fans will particularly enjoy the Fear Street series of slasher films that are just as much a throwback to the 1970s and 80s aesthetic of horror. ![]() ![]() Horror fans everywhere can trace the origins of their fandom to those tattered copies of RL Stine novels borrowed from the school library - if you could get your hands on them. He may not fully understand the game, but he channels the spirit of sportsmanship: A central factor that makes this, the nicest show on TV right now, a must-watch for everyone, not just football (or indeed Newcastle) fans.
